BBS is a file format used in Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) to store text documents. The format contains messages, descriptions and metadata formatted for BBS software. This file type was popular but later discontinued.
There are two main types of BBS applications – Active and Classic software. BBS files can be opened on Linux, Mac and Windows using BBS server software. Seven other programs also support BBS files.
To convert a BBS file, open it with a text editor like Notepad or TextEdit. You can then save the text content in formats like TXT and HTML.
On some websites, you can find information on opening and converting BBS files. The websites also list current applications supporting the BBS format.
440 incompatible file types use the .BBS extension. The actual format was likely created with the gedit program. Useful BBS file tools include openers, converters, viewers and editors.
To associate BBS files with the correct application in Windows, right click on a BBS file. Click “Open with” and choose the program. Check “Always use this app”. On Mac, right click on the BBS file and click “Open with”>”Other”. Then select the program and check “Always Open With”.
You can also view BBS files directly in your browser. Just drag the file onto the browser window. The browser has an online text viewer for BBS files.
