An AVIF file stores images. It uses the AV1 and HEIF formats. Several companies made the AV1 format in 2015. These include Amazon, Cisco, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Mozilla, and Netflix. AVIF files compress images like JPEGs and PNGs do. But AVIF was made to improve on JPEG and others.
AVIF can save single images or sequences. It supports features like HDR and color profiles. AVIF allows lossy and lossless compression. Lossy compression makes smaller files. AVIF makes smaller files than JPEG. It also has better colors.
Windows 10 can open AVIF files in File Explorer. Linux with GNOME 3.38+ can also open them. That uses the GNOME image viewer. Safari got AVIF support recently too. It was in iOS 16 and MacOS 13.
To open an AVIF file, use Chrome 85+. Or Firefox 93+. No plugins needed. To edit AVIFs, use Photoshop or GIMP. Online converters can change AVIFs to other formats. Like JPEG, PNG or GIF.
