APNG is an image file format extending PNG to allow animated images. It works similarly to animated GIFs. APNG supports 24-bit images and 8-bit transparency. The first frame is stored as normal PNG. So most PNG decoders can display the first APNG frame.
APNG comprises multiple PNG frames representing an animation sequence. This gives visualization similar to a GIF. APNG is backward compatible with non-animated PNGs.
APNG is supported on Linux, Mac and Windows devices. APNG files are often associated with Firefox. Opera, XnView, Chrome also support APNGs.
The APNG file extension is “.png” as PNG. It is supported on most browsers. APNG allows alpha channel transparency. GIF has only one transparency level. APNG can display a pixel as completely transparent or opaque.
The APNG format intended to replace simple animated GIFs while adding 24-bit and 8-bit transparency support.
