Starting with Access 2007, .accdb is the default Access file format. .accdb file format supports calculated fields, attachments, multi-valued fields, database encryption and integration with MS Outlook and SharePoint. It replaced the .mdb format from previous Access versions.
.accdb is similar to .mdb files but supports additional functionality. If you cannot open the .accdb file on your computer there may be several reasons. To open .accdb files use Access 2007 and later versions. Windows users can open .accdb files in Microsoft Access. Mac users can open .accdb files in MDB Viewer which supports .accdb files from Access 2007, 2010, and 2013.
When working with .accdb files in Access a lock file is generated to prevent modifying the database when multiple users access it. .mdb format allowed database replication while .accdb does not. We can link a table from .mdb to .accdb but not vice versa.
The .accdb improvements include complex data types, enhanced data storage and management, security, multi-user support and Office integration.
