The .efl file extension stands for External Format Language File. EFL files contain instructions that direct the NFBTRANS braille translator program. NFBTRANS was developed by the National Federation of the Blind. EFL files may apply globally to multiple text files. Or they may be specific to a single text file. A specific EFL file has the same base filename as its text file. For example “document1.txt” and “document1.efl.”
EFL files are used by the NFBTRANS program to translate text into Grade Two braille. The instructions in the EFL file tell NFBTRANS how to handle formatting for a given text file. For example, an EFL file could specify page layout. Or indicate special formatting for section headings in the text.
There are two main types of .efl files. One type is the External Format Language File as used by NFBTRANS. The other is an Encrypted File from the Encryptafile program by XenoSystems. The External Format Language File type is more common overall based on usage statistics.
EFL files are primarily seen on Windows systems. With most usage coming from Windows 10 users in the United States. The Chrome browser is the most common way EFL file users access the web. As an uncommon file type, EFL files are not present on most systems. But they can be used both on desktop and mobile devices.

An EFL file contains encrypted data using secret-key or public-key encryption. Encryptafile supports AES, Twofish, and RSA algorithms but seems no longer supported.
EFL files may use Windows programs. The software recommended for EFL files is Encryptafile by XenoSystems. Their website has information about Encryptafile, EFL formats, and supported files.
If EFL files open incorrectly, first verify Encryptafile is installed. If not, install it and associate EFL files with it.
You can also use EFL File Opener, Converter, Viewer and Editor tools.
EFL files are encrypted by Encryptafile for Windows. It supports AES, Twofish and RSA encryption. Created by XenoSystems for encrypted files. Software that opens EFL files: Encryptafile by XenoSystems. Compatible with Windows.
When double-clicking an EFL file, you may see “Cannot Open This File Type”. This is because the operating system cannot associate your EFL file with the required program. To fix this, install the program on your computer so the operating system can open EFL files.
EFL files are used by Easiteach (teaching software) and Encryptafile (encryption software). The .efl extension is primarily a resource or data file. Easiteach is no longer maintained but old versions are available.
