There are two file types for AEA: AdWords Editor Archive and ATRAC1 Audio File. AEA as AdWords Editor Archive opens with Google AdWords Editor and Translator Toolkit on Windows and Mac. AEA as audio file opens with File Viewer Plus on Windows.
To open AAA files, first test suggested programs. If none work, install a program supporting AAA files from this list: Programs supporting AAA files.
To convert old AEA files to MP3: Use Free HD Video Converter Factory, VLC Media Player, or an online AEA to MP3 converter.
To upload ATRAC1 files from MD-SP to PC: These have the AEA extension and play in VLC Media Player. Use the MZ-RH1 player to upload old recordings. Other Hi-MD recorders can’t do this.
AEA files play in other programs but not yet in Foobar 1.3.14. It’s raw ATRAC 1 from minidisc, not ATRAC3 in an OMA/OMG container. There’s no DRM. I reported this bug – the attachment has the source file if needed.

ATRAC is commonly Sony ATRAC format. ATRAC files work on Windows. They are audio files. SonicStage handles ATRAC files but other tools may too. The Sony site has ATRAC info.
The AEA files should be 16/44.1. Decoding uses the ATRAC1 decoder in ffmpeg/VLC. Converting to over 320kbps means something is wrong since the SP format is only 292kbit/sec.
The main ATRAC problem is incorrect program associations. To fix, double-click the ATRAC file. If your system has a program to open it, it should. Otherwise, install SonicStage.
