The ray file extension is used by the Rayshade software to store ray-traced images. Rayshade runs on Windows, Linux and Mac OS X. The .ray files contain picture images created in Rayshade. To open .ray files, use the Rayshade software. The .ray format is not convertable to other formats. Rayshade was created at Stanford University and uses ray tracing to generate photorealistic 3D images. The .ray file defines the elements of the 3D scene such as shapes, lighting, and viewing angle. While .ray files are text-based, the Rayshade engine interprets the data to render the image. If Rayshade is unavailable, a text editor can be used to view the file contents.
