The inprogress file extension stores temporary backup data for Apple’s Time Machine. Time Machine backs up system and sensitive data on Mac OS X. By default, inprogress files are automatically created and removed. If backup fails, inprogress files may remain. To view inprogress file contents, right-click and select “Show Package Content”. Inprogress files use the Mac OS X package format. They can store backup data from failed Time Machine attempts. After system restart, files can be reindexed for Time Machine to try again.
