Install ArcGIS Desktop software to open ECFG files. ECFG files are ESRI XML Zipped Database files used by ArcGIS and other programs. They contain zipped XML databases. Use ArcGIS Desktop to work with *.ecfg files. Compatible tools may be able to export *.ecfg files to other formats.
ECFG files were introduced with ArcGIS 10. Before that, ArcGIS loaded custom components from the system registry. Instead, it now reads ECFG files created by developers using ESRIResAsm.exe to register components. This includes the .DLL file and category information. Note: ECFG files must be placed in the appropriate ArcGIS product and version configuration folder to be loaded.
If there is no ArcGIS Desktop or similar software installed that supports ECFG files, you must first download and install it. We provide links to software developers’ websites where you can safely download ArcGIS Desktop. When you double-click an ECFG file and Windows does not recognize the extension, it will ask you to select an app to open the file. You can associate the ECFG extension with ArcGIS Desktop in the Windows Registry so it opens automatically.
