An EC3 file stores audio in the Enhanced AC-3 format. It supports up to 15 channels and 768 kbit/s bitrate. The format is used for delivering 7.1 surround sound to home theaters. Dolby Laboratories developed it as a successor to AC-3.
EC3 is also a project file format used by EPSON Print CD. It can incorporate bitmap images. EC3 templates can be used to start new designs. Designs can print directly onto discs or save as PDFs.
The .ec3 extension can also refer to the Enhanced AC-3 audio format. Although formally incorrect, “.ec3” still denotes Dolby Digital Plus files. Though better than AC-3, Enhanced AC-3 is used less often.
To open .EC3 files, update the software you normally use to open them. Only the latest versions support the format. Check files for viruses by scanning with antivirus software. On Windows, change default apps in Options. Get .EC3 file updates from the EPSON site. Scan files again before opening to check for corruption or viruses.
