AIVault, by EllaZ Systems, also uses the .aiv extension. These files store text memos and comments for projects. Users enter this text data into the AIVault program. When saved, the program outputs .aiv files by default. The AIVault software references the data in these files when users open or edit them.

When you play a skirmish game, Stronghold Crusader loads the castle layout randomly from one of the default AIV files named after the AI character. There can be issues opening AIV files if the file is corrupted, infected, or if your software is outdated.
To create customized AIV files, use the AIV Editor Tool. Some considerations when customizing: the AI randomly decides which file to load based on map size and terrain. Each AI comes with 8 premade castles per character stored as AIV files.
