To restore a game from a backup CSM file, use the Steam “Backup and Restore Games” option and select the file. CSM files store backup data for fully installed and patched Steam games. More Steam file types are the CSD and SIS formats. They also contain game backups. The CSM files locate in the game folders under the “Steam Backups” folder.

CSM is a file extension for Character Studio Marker Format files. The CSM format stores position markers for 3D characters. It was created by Autodesk for the Character Studio biped animation tool in 3ds Max. CSM files save biped position data. Limb rotation data is stored in related BVH files.
To open CSM files, use 3ds Max. 3ds Max can also export CSM files to other formats. If Windows does not associate CSM files with 3ds Max, double click a CSM file. This opens a program selection wizard. Install 3ds Max if needed.
CSM files contain ASCII text data. They describe markers for 3D characters used in animation, simulations, games, and special effects renderings. The markers have information like object positions and rotations. After installing 3ds Max, Windows may automatically associate CSM files with it. If not, manually select 3ds Max as the default program for CSM files.
