The .xms file extension has two uses:
1. Music Studio Project developed by Alexander Gross. Contains audio tracks, song settings, keyboard layouts, metronome settings for an iOS music production app.
2. XMS-Tracker Music Module. Contains sound samples and note patterns similar to Amiga’s .MOD files.
XMS-Tracker program is no longer in development. The .xms format is proprietary and cannot be opened by other applications.
While .xms files contain many settings, they do not store preferences from Music Studio’s “Setup” screen. Software that can open .xms Music Studio Project files:

To create .xms files requires Alexander Gross Music Studio or other software listed. iOS apps are available from app stores. The .xms file specification relates closely to the .MOD format used by Amiga Systems.

Programs can open, view, edit, convert, merge, split, and compare XMS files without installing anything. More details are in the links. The XMS file does not save Setup screen preferences. It is a proprietary format unopenable by other apps.
The XMS Tracker is no longer developed. The XMS file icon shows it is a music module. It has a low popularity rating so not on most devices.
