While .img2 was used in IPSW files, these were 8900 files wrapping an IMG2. An iBoot before version 304 or the S5L8900 processor can parse IMG2 files. Later iBoots and processors don’t support the format. The 8900 format, usually wrapping an IMG2, also requires an early iBoot or S5L8900.
