The CCI format is the official Nintendo extension for 3DS game cards. CCI files are 3DS disc images used to play games. They contain multiple CXI files, which are 3DS “executables”. Only one CXI is needed to launch a game.
You can open CCI files in Citra. Select “Add New Game Directory” in Citra. Then navigate to the folder with your CCI file and open it. The CCI and 3DS formats are identical: NCSD. This is the container for NCCH files. NCCH files are 3DS applications.
CCI files also store medical images, used by ClearCanvas. This open-source program displays clinical images. Details at the ClearCanvas website.
I decrypted a 3DS ROM. But instead of CIA, the Decryptor made a CCI file. FBI couldn’t install it. This ROM was an Embedded Update, not the base game.
Citra uses four file types. 3DS and CCI are disc images. CXI are executables. CIA install 3DS software. Save states go in the User directory.
