The RensenWare virus encrypts files. It adds a .RENSENWARE extension to them. Instead of money, it requires you to reach a high score in Touhou Seirensen 12 game to restore files.
RensenWare is ransomware created by Kangjun Heo as a joke. He uploaded source code to Github. RensenWare encrypts files then displays a ransom message. The message requires a score in Touhou 12 game to decrypt files.
Major antiviruses detect RensenWare as “Ransom.HiddenTears”. The file name is rensenWare.exe. The encryption process completes then shows the ransom message.
RensenWare targets many file types. Encrypted files get a .RENSENWARE extension. For example, test.jpg becomes test.jpg.RENSENWARE.
RensenWare has no exception handlers initially. Unexpected termination can cause permanent data loss. The source code is not provided to avoid misuse.
Instead of money, RensenWare requires playing Touhou 12 game. This unique demand makes it a ransomware troll. Programs like rensenWare Forcing Tool restore encrypted files.
