A CHIP file contains data that can be imported into a spreadsheet. In a spreadsheet, you can edit the data to annotate genes. If a scientist encounters a gene expression file, they must convert the identifiers to symbols using a CHIP file. Then they can analyze the data. CHIP files have three columns: Probe Set IDs, Gene Symbols, and Gene Titles.
CHIP files can be opened and analyzed by GSEA software. Users select gene sets then upload the CHIP file. The file name must end in .chip. The first line has column headings separated by tabs.
I wrote an article to help remove the .chip extension in Windows. CHIP is ransomware created to extort money. It is located in %AppData% under a strange name. CHIP uses keys to encrypt files.
A Chip Description file has sections started by names in brackets. It contains CDF, Chip, QCI, and UnitJ sections.
