3DZ files format games for online play on the 3DS. Their format matches more popular .3DS files. But 3DZ files contain extra data in their header. This allows online play through Gateway.
Computer emulators like TronDS or Citra cannot open unmodified 3DZ files. But they may play the games if the “.3dz” file extension is renamed to “.3ds.” Also, the 3DZ header must be removed.
Originally, Easy 3D Creator software developed the 3DZ file extension. Easy 3D Creator makes 3D screen savers for Windows. Its project files use the 3DZ extension. Now, Gateway 3DS has popularized 3DZ files for gaming instead.
To open 3DZ files, use Gateway 3DS software or a Nintendo 3DS system. If your 3DZ files do not open, your Gateway software may need an update. Check their website for the newest version compatible with 3DZ files. You can also scan files with antivirus software to check for corruption or viruses.

If .3dz file does not open in Easy 3D Creator, create file association. Right-click file, select Properties. Use Change button to manually select program directory. Check box to permanently associate .3dz files.
Step 2. Update Easy 3D Creator to latest version if needed.
Can’t open .3dz file? Download and install Easy 3D Creator software. Manually associate .3dz file with it if needed.
Other programs are not compatible. Easy 3D Creator saves screensaver projects as .3dz files. Only it opens this format. Free download available but only works on older Windows.
