A file with the GHO extension is a Norton Ghost backup image. It contains an exact copy of a hard drive or other storage device created by the Norton Ghost software. GHO files are often used to make full backups of drives.
The GHO format supports encryption. GHO files typically store backups of disks, pendrives, memory cards or other devices. Norton Ghost 2003 and earlier versions create images in this format.
Norton Ghost 9.0 and later instead use the V2I format. Although newer Ghost versions don’t support GHO, you can access files in them using Ghost Explorer. This portable program extracts parts of a GHO backup.
After Norton Ghost was discontinued in 2013, the Ghost Solution Suite software can make GHO images. The suite was later renamed to Norton Ghost Solution Suite. You need this Suite or earlier Ghost versions to restore files and drives from a GHO backup.
