A file with the MPK extension is an ArcGIS map package. It contains map data in one easy to distribute file. It also includes a map document (MXD file). MPK files open in ArcGIS Pro in Windows 10. They were introduced in ArcGIS version 10. They are not compatible with earlier versions.
To create a map package, ArcMap first downloads all data. Then it combines the data with the MXD file into the MPK file. This allows viewing maps without access to data connections required to view map contents.
To extract a MPK file, drag it into ArcMap. Or right-click and select “Unpack.” By default, ArcMap extracts packages to \Documents\ArcGIS\Packages\.
You can also create MPK files using ArcMap’s “Share As” option. Select “Map Package” to create an MPK file with the map and its data. Then share the MPK file. Others can open it in ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro.
You can also create MPK files using Python. Import arcpy and use PackageMap_management() specifying the MXD and output MPK file. Python can also batch create MPK files for all map documents in a folder.

To open an MPK file, the appropriate application is needed. If the file is corrupted or links are incorrect, it may not open properly. Install software that supports MPK files or fix registry issues.
