Originally, the ZIX format was used by Quicken to encrypt financial data. However, Quicken stopped using ZIX files due to virus problems. ZIX files then became associated with the WinZix software.
The WinZix software claims to compress files better and faster than other utilities. However, WinZix installs spyware, adware and viruses on computers. The ZIX files themselves do not contain viruses. But the WinZix software that opens or creates them does.
ZIX compressed archives can be accidentally downloaded from file sharing sites. The archives may have a readme file telling users to install WinZix to open them. Three programs are known to open ZIX files: WinZix, UnZixHTA and UnZixWin.
The ZIX file extension represents a binary compressed archive format. It belongs to the dangerous files category. WinZix is the program most commonly used to open ZIX files. However, use of WinZix is not recommended due to its malware infections. Other utilities like UnZix may allow safe handling of ZIX files.
