Snagit saves screenshots as SNAGX files. The SNAGX file extension allows continued editing of screenshot annotations. It stores images with vector objects and an undo history. Windows does not recognize the SNAGX extension by default. When double-clicking a SNAGX file, you get an error requesting an app to open the file. You must have Snagit to open and edit SNAGX files.
SNAGX files offer benefits. You can apply multiple custom tags to images. Saving as SNAGX also maintains options like arrow end styles and callout tails that otherwise get lost saving as other formats. To keep these options, save screenshots to SNAGX instead of SNAG.
Without Snagit, rename SNAGX files to ZIP files. Then extract the images and JSON data. The extracted JSON data files are small and viewable without Excel. This lets you access SNAGX content without the Snagit editor.
Overall, the SNAGX extension associates with Snagit for editing annotated screenshots. It stores extra data other formats don’t. SNAGX maintains custom options, facilitates future edits, and allows access to data when Snagit isn’t available.
