Files with .czi extension are images saved by Zeiss CZI microscopes. They contain the image plus metadata. CZI files are supported by software for Linux, macOS, and Windows. ImageJ can open CZI files and is the most common program used for these files.
CZI files can be found as special images saved by Zeiss CZI microscopes. They contain the image with additional metadata. CZI files are supported by software for devices running Linux, Mac OS, and Windows. ImageJ supports CZI files and is the most frequently used program to handle such files.
To open CZI files on Windows, right click on a CZI file and select “Open with” then “Choose another app”. Select the desired program and check “Always use this app to open .CZI files”. On Mac, right click or Ctrl-click the CZI file, click “Open with” then “Other…” to select the program.
The CZI file format combines imaging data with relevant metadata in one file. It was developed by ZEISS to meet microscopy imaging requirements. The format can save time lapse, Z-stacks, multiposition experiments and virtual slides. A growing number of projects and companies use and support CZI files.
