The MPO file format is generated by digital cameras using two separate lenses to capture overlapping images. These images are combined as a single 3D image. The MPO file can be viewed as 3D when displayed on supported devices.
To open an MPO file on Windows, right-click on the file, choose “Open with” and select an application that supports MPO. Check the box to always use that application. On macOS, right-click, choose “Open with” and select an application, checking “Always open with.”
Standard image viewers will only display one image, usually the left one. Software programs that support opening MPO files include StereoPhoto Maker, XstereO Player, and StereoPhotoView. Apple Preview and Microsoft Photos can also open MPO files.
The Nintendo 3DS can create 640×480 MPO files viewable with the NVIDIA 3D photo viewer. When saving an MPO file, ensure you use the .mpo extension and the highest possible bitrate for optimal quality.
