File extension .SMI refers to Self-Mounting Disk Image developed by Apple. SMI files were used on Macintosh before .DMG files. They allow CDs and disks to be available as downloads. When opened, a disk image mounts as a disk.
SMI files can also contain:
SAMI Subtitles Format developed by Microsoft based on HTML and CSS. It stores subtitles as text for media players.
Self-extracting archives that open with Disk Utility. A disk management and recovery program for Mac.
SMIL Presentations referencing text, media and data. Used for RealPlay files.
SMI files are still popular in China, often viewed in Windows 10 with Chrome. Programs that open SMI files include SAMI files, RealPlay SMIL, Mac Disk Images and SiSMS files. Each contains data related to the program that created it.

SAMI files store subtitles as text. They were designed so CDs and floppy disks could be downloaded digitally. Double-clicking SMI files loads a virtual disk. When Mac OS X arrived, a DiskImageMounter utility mounted disk images. As .DMG files replaced SMI in OS X, self-mounting images declined.
SAMI extends HTML and CSS. It synchronizes subtitles with media. The Windows Media SDK has SAMI examples. SAMI subtitles coexist with media as text files. They are easy to modify, maintain, customize and localize. Microsoft Encarta, Windows Media Player and some games support SAMI.
In Korea SAMI subtitles are text-based. About 10 extensions exist, plus 20 more in videos. SRT handles light subtitles. ASS does fancy ones. SAMI relies on HTML so support is straightforward. If your player handles SAMI poorly, file a report.
