SHP files exist as 2 different types. Please find information about each of them below.

SHP files contain shapes created in 3D Studio. Users can draw polygons in the 2D Shaper and save as SHP files to reuse across models. To open a SHP file, import it into Autodesk 3ds Max. When importing a file with multiple shapes, choose to merge into one object or create multiple. The shape importer smooths angles on splines.
3D Studio allows creating 3D models and animations. Like 3ds Max, users can draw 2D polygons in the 2D Shaper and save as SHP files. These store shapes as ASCII text describing geometric properties.
SHP files have multiple uses. AutoCAD Shape uses the SHP format. It is also used in CAD programs to store 2D/3D models with code for visualizing graphics. SHP files appear in engineering, architecture and video games.
To open SHP files, use 3D Studio or import into 3ds Max. The default imports shapes as one editable spline. If the file has multiple shapes, choose to merge or not in the import dialog.
The SHP extension is for vector graphics and geospatial data used in GIS software. SHP files contain data describing geographic features. The format was created and is developed by ESRI for its GIS products.
