If you have permission to write to the original Abaqus file, you are asked to convert it to the current version. Abaqus/CAE creates a backup of the original file and journal file, saves the converted database and new journal file in the current directory with the original names.
Output and model database files from previous Abaqus releases must be upgraded when opened. When you open multiple output databases, all files must already be upgraded; otherwise unupgraded files will not open.
Select File-Open to open a model or output database. You can also open a database by clicking the File toolbar icon. The Open Database dialog box displays.
The Abaqus output database comes in ODB and SIM formats. By default, output is ODB format. For an Abaqus/Standard or Abaqus/Explicit analysis you can write results in both formats in the same job. Only SIM format can be imported for high-performance postprocessing.
The ODB file stores model data and analysis results as an assembly of part instances. Abaqus/CAE Visualization uses this for postprocessing and diagnostics.
