What is a GSD File and Why it is required? GSD file is a PROFIBUS General Station Description File. PROFIBUS is a set of protocols used by networked devices in manufacturing. While connecting device through profibus / Profinet, GSD/GSDML files comes into picture. Each device has its unique GSD file. To setup a device in controller, controller gets the device parameters and characteristics from GSD files.
GSD files describe device communication features. GSD files are created with PROFIBUS GSD Editor or text editor. Creating GSD files allows network devices to communicate to systems. Files with gsd extension are hardware description files in Generic Station Description format. GSD files are opened with ProfinetCommander.
GSD file extension is for a General Station Description File. Configuration is used for Process Automation or Decentralized Peripherals devices. Allows creation with text editor like PROFIBUS GSD and includes configuration information and keywords separated by line breaks.
Microsoft Notepad not installed. Get error trying to open GSD file. Generally in OS because Microsoft Notepad not on PC. Opening with double-click won’t work because OS cannot connect program. Can select another GSD program to open by clicking “Show Apps”.
