Excel 97-2003 workbooks open in Compatibility Mode automatically.
XLS is Excel’s proprietary binary file format used until 2007. XLS files store data in rows and columns with formatting, images, charts and more. After 2007,XLSX replaced XLS as default format.
XLS files can be opened on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS. Most common programs are Excel, OpenOffice and Numbers. Some features may not transfer when saving as XLS.
