What is a DGN file? The DGN file extension is used for designs created with MicroStation software by Bentley Systems. DGN files store 2D or 3D drawings for things like highways, bridges, and buildings.
DGN files were first created in the 1980s by Intergraph using the ISFF standard. In 2000, Bentley Systems made a new version called V8 DGN that built on DGN’s capabilities but had a different internal structure.
You can view and edit DGN files with MicroStation, AutoCAD, TurboCAD, or CorelCAD. To only view DGN files, you can use the free Bentley View software. But Bentley View works fully only with V8 DGN files.
If your computer is slow, close other programs before opening a DGN file. Keep your system and software updated to help DGN files work properly and avoid problems. Updated software can fix bugs that cause issues with opening files.
