An AIF file contains uncompressed high-quality audio similar to a .WAV file. Apple developed the AIFF format in 1998, basing it on Electronic Arts’ .IFF format. Standard AIF files use 44.1KHz sampling rate, are 16-bit, and have two channels for stereo sound. AIF files are similar to .MP3 files, but AIFs are uncompressed while MP3s are compressed. This makes AIF files larger while higher quality.
AIF files store PCM audio directly, ensuring maximum quality but large sizes. AIFs can also store metadata like artist and album details, making them good for audio libraries. Many media players support AIFF format to play AIF files. Unlike MP3s, AIFs are uncompressed so retain better quality but take up more disk space – about 10MB per minute.
The audio data in most AIFF files is uncompressed PCM. This uses more disk space than formats like MP3. There’s also a compressed AIFF variant called AIFF-C or AIFC. AIFF can store musical notes and loop points for hardware samplers and music apps. The standard AIFF extension is .aiff or .aif. For compressed variants it’s .aifc.
Some AIF files could instead store data used by a Symbian app. The file extension for AIFF is usually .aiff or .aif on macOS and .aif on Windows. Audio apps supporting the format can open files ending in .aifc too.
