The RAR file format was created in 1995 by Eugene Roshal, a Russian software engineer. It is used to archive files using various compression methods. There are applications available for Windows, Linux and macOS to extract RAR files.
The filename extensions used are .rar for the data and .rev for recovery. Previous RAR versions split large archives into smaller multi-volume files, numbered .r00, .r01, etc.
To extract files from a multi-volume RAR archive, open the primary .rar file with a decompression utility. The utility can extract all included files across the volumes.
Overall, .rar files are versatile archives but not as widely supported as ZIP files. To open a .rar file, use WinRAR. It fully supports RAR files so you can create and unpack them. Double click a .rar file icon to open in WinRAR and browse contents. Then select files, click “Extract To”, enter destination, and click “OK” to extract.
If WinRAR cannot handle .rar files, update it. Newer versions may support formats older versions don’t.
RAR archives can be large, up to 8 exabytes. But avoid FAT32 filesystems which limit files to 4GB.
